 갑자기 H가 알고리즘에 그리스 음식들이 나온다고 해서 H가 선택해서 방문한 그릭조이이다.

H는 이날 전까지 한번도 그리스 음식을 경험해본 적이 없다고 했고, 나의 경우 해외에 오랫동안 거주했던 곳이 매년 그리스 페스티벌을 할 정도로 주변에 그리스, 지중해 음식점들이 많았기에 나름 많이 경험을 해본 상태였다. H가 몇곳의 레스토랑들을 나에게 보여주었고, 사실 내가 보기에는 정말 크게 차이들이 없어 보였기에 H에게 선택을 떠넘겼다. 그렇게 방문하게된 곳이 바로 이곳이다.

 

메뉴 / Menu

 

메뉴판을 보면 느낌적인 느낌이 있을 수 있을 것 같다. 그렇다, 이곳은 주인분이 혼자 운영하는 곳이며, 올드함이 남아 있는 곳이었다. 사실 주류 메뉴에 적혀있는 맨트들이 정말 취향에 안맞았지만 나름 위트 있다 생각 할 수 있는 포인트라 생각한다.

우리는 수블라키와 무사카 그리고 셀러드 를 주문하였다.

 

주인 혼자 요리하고 운영하는 곳이기에 기본적으로 시간이 오래 걸린다. 기다리는동안 식전 빵과 셀러드가 먼저 나왔다.

셀러드는...토마토 위에 페타치즈와 올리브오일 정말 가감없는 셀러드였다. 

그후 약 20분을 기다려서 나온 무사카 ( 가장 오른쪽 사진 ) 과 좀더 걸려서 나온 수블라키가 차례로 나왔다.

 

종합 / Overall

 

• 음식 / Food

 내 개인적인 경험중에서는 최악, 최저의 그리스 음식이었다. 나오면서 H에게도 혹시 그리스 음식이 이렇다라고 생각하면 절대 안된다고 이야기하니 H도 그럴 것 같다 라고 이야기할 정도 였다. 셀러드에서는 토마토 뿐이었으며, 굳이 왜 페타 치즈를 그레이터로 갈았거나 저런 제품을 사용 하는지 모르겠다. 식정빵의 경우 프렌차이즈 빵집의 빵보다 한참 별로였다.

무사카, 음...내가 많이 먹었던 무사카 라기보단 베지테리안 라자냐 같은 느낌이 더욱 강했다. 수블라키또한 피타브래드부터 안에 들어간 닭 까지 그 무엇도 조이풀하지 못했다. 토마토만 맛난 곳이었다는 것이 내 개인적 생각이다. 

 

Honestly, this was the worst Greek food I’ve ever had. On the way out, I even told H, “Please don’t think this is what Greek food is actually like,” and H agreed—it really didn’t seem right. The salad was basically just tomatoes, and I have no idea why they grated the feta cheese or used whatever kind that was. The bread they served was worse than something you’d get at a chain bakery.

As for the moussaka… hmm, it felt more like a vegetarian lasagna than any moussaka I’ve had before. The souvlaki was also a letdown—nothing about it was enjoyable, from the pita bread to the chicken inside. To be honest, the only decent thing was the tomatoes. That pretty much sums up how I felt about the whole meal.

 

• 공간 / Space

 음... 오래된 곳이다. 하지만 관리가 잘된 곳은 아니다. 테이블에 앉자마자 그 오래된 테이블의 끈적임을 느낄 수 있어 나는 최대한 팔을 올리지 않았고, H는 물티슈로 테이블을 닦아보았지만 좋지 못한 선택이었다. 닦은 물티슈에 묻어나온 때들이 더욱 충격적이었기 떄문이다. 이곳 주인분께서 그리스를 좋아하시고, 케나다에서부터 영업을 하셨으며, 책을 낼 정도로 그리스 음식을 좋아하는 것을 알 수 있지만 좋아하는 것과 잘하는것과 하는 것은 전부 다른 것이다. 우선 우리가 방문 했을 때 단체 한팀에 2명 한팀 그리고 울리까지 3팀이 있었다. 하지만 음식이 나오는 속도와 접객을 하는 속도 모두 매우 느리셨다. 같은 업종에 종사하기에 최대한 이해하려고 해도 내 개인적으로는 이 주인분은 필드에서 직접 뛸 나이가 지나셨다고 생각된다. 이 외에 공간을 이야기하면 벽에는 주인분이 찍으신 사진들로 장식 되어있어서 얼마나 좋아 하셨는지 알 수 있었지만, 그것이 전부이다.

 

Hmm… it’s an old place. But it’s definitely not well-maintained. The moment we sat down, I could feel how sticky the old table was, so I tried not to rest my arms on it. H tried wiping it down with a wet tissue, but that turned out to be a bad idea—the amount of grime that came off was actually kind of shocking.

You can tell the owner loves Greece—he used to run a business in Canada and even published a book about Greek food. But loving something, being good at it, and actually running a successful restaurant are completely different things.

When we visited, there were only three groups: one large group, a table of two, and us. Still, both the food and the service were painfully slow. I work in the same industry, so I really tried to be understanding, but to be honest, it felt like the owner has reached a point where maybe being on the floor himself is no longer ideal.

As for the space, the walls were decorated with photos he’d taken himself, which clearly showed his passion for Greece—but that was pretty much the only memorable thing about the place.

 

• 요약

 이곳이 과거에 어떤 맛을 갖고 있었고 공간이었는지 나는 알 수 없다. 하지만 공간을 보면 주인이 가지고 있는 그리스에 대한 애정을 느낄 수 있어서 더욱 씁쓸한 곳이었다. 관리되지 못한 공간, 노주인이 홀로 운영하는 공간이다. 이곳에서 파는 그리스 음식 자체가 정말 고급지고 그런 요리가 아닌 해외에서는 길거리에서 먹을 수 있는 수준의 메뉴 구성이지만 나에게는 그 어떤 길거리 그리스 음식보다도 못한 맛과 퀄리티였다. 혹시 그리스 음식을 처음 접하는 분이 이곳을 고려한다면 나는 감히 절대 가지말라고 이야기 할 것이다. 사실 그누구에게도 추천하지못할 곳이다. 심지어 부모의 원수에게도 말이다. 오랫동안 유지가되고 운영을 한다는 것은 많은 것을 설명해줄 수 있는 부분인데, 지금 이곳은 그 어떠한 것도 설명하지 못하고 의문만 줄 뿐이다.

 

I don’t know what this place used to be like in the past—what kind of food it served or what kind of atmosphere it had. But looking around, you can definitely feel the owner’s love for Greece, which actually made the experience even more bittersweet. It’s a poorly maintained space, run solely by an elderly owner.

The Greek food served here isn’t meant to be fancy—these are the kinds of dishes you’d find on the street in other countries. But to me, this was worse than any Greek street food I’ve ever had, both in taste and quality. If someone were thinking of trying Greek food for the first time here, I’d honestly tell them not to go. In fact, I don’t think I could recommend this place to anyone. Not even to someone I hold a grudge against.

Running a restaurant for a long time usually says something positive—but in this case, it doesn’t explain anything. If anything, it just leaves you with more questions.
